EDUCATIONAL ENDOWMENT LEASES.
Clause 9 of the Land Laws Amendr ment Bill enables owners of pastorai leases to surrender their leases and obtain new ones in their place. In the Legislative Council yesterday, the Hon. Sir Thomas Mackenzie suggested that the clause should be extended to include educational endowments. The lessees of educational reserves were just as much entitled to relief as anybody else, and it seemed hard on them that they could not have the same privilege as had been accorded to others.
The Hon. J. G. Garland said he did ' not think there was any need to interfere with the educational leases. Tlistenants now had the right to surrender their leases and obtain new leases for longer periods. It would be an unnecessary duplication of the law if educational endowments'were included in the 1 Bill. , •'■-.■
Th» Leader of the Council (Sir William Fraser) said that the position" might be as stated by Mr. Garland. He did not know. He could assure Sir Thomas Mackenzie that the point raised by him had not been overlooked by the Government. However, there were difficulties in tha way of amending the law this year, and the situation Would be reviewed again next year. The Government' was anxious that all tenants, should be treated alike and did not want to see any injustice done. If necessary, legislation would be introduced next year. : The Bill was passed -without amendment.
