CADETS' SHOOTING COMPETITION

• The challenge trophy donated by His Excellency the Governor-General, with the object of encouraging musketry efficiency in the New Zealand cadets, has now been handed to the Defence Department by His Excellency. It is a massive silver bowl beautifully designed, and should be a much-coveted trophy.

The trophy is competed for in conjunction with the Imperial Challenge Shield competition, which is conducted annually by the National Rifle Association of Great Britain, and in which teams of boys from all parts of the Empire take part. The conditions under which the Governor-General's trophy will be held aro as follow:—The cadet unit in New Zealand which makes the greatest all/ round effort and shows the Tiighest allround training by entering successfully the largest number of teams in the Empire Challenge Shield Competition, taking into consideration the quality of the shooting of the various, teams representing the. unit, and the percentage of boys that shoot in the competition as compared with the total number of boys of shooting age in the unit. , •

The Minister of Defence (the Hon. Sir R. Heaton Rhodes) explained to a "Post" representative to-day, that the Imperial Challenge Shield Competition has been,held for several years. Among New Zealand units, the New Plymouth Boys' High School Cadets have always held a commanding position, and the trophy has been awarded them for the year 1921. His Excellency was most anxious to present the trophy personally, and should circumstances permit he would do so shortly. *

This year record entries —279 ■ senior teams and 95 junior teams —were received in the Dominion, and competition for the premier place in the competition, said the. Minister, was e^traordinnrily keen. As previously mentioned the ■.competition *s conducted under the auspices of ilie National Rifle Association of Great Britain, to which all tarcets are sent on completion of shooting.
