POSITION OF RETIRED CIVIL
SERVANTS.
A letter dealing with the position of retired Civil servants in regard to the bonus reductions has been forwarded to the Prime Minister by the President of the Association of Federated Superannuated Public Servants of New Zealand (Mr W. de R. Barclay) After referring to the fate of the association's petition to Parliament, Mr. Barclay says that any bonus that had been granted to superannuated Public servants and to widows 'and children of deceased Public servants for the periods ending 31st March, .1920-2L-22, is not a drain on the superannuation fund. The bonus was solely consequent on the abnormal cost of living. Mr. Barclay further states that the arbitrary reduction—without any authority so far disclosed—had no relation to the phrase "necessitous circumstances." It is submitted that as the reduction in the bonus was merely the action of the Department and not the policy of the Government, those annuitants who had been victimised were quite justified in looking for a refund of the amount deducted. The time was oppoTtune, and indeed clamant, foi a full, comprehensive, and impartial inquiry by some competent tribunal.
