LADIES' TOURNEY
RESULTS OF MATCHES AT
NAPIER.
' NAPIER/26th August. The New Zealand ladiet' hockey tournament commenced at Napier to-day in glorious sunshine. Nine teams, in all are competing, including Poverty Bay, Wellington, Hawkes Bay A and B, Wairarapa, Foilding, Marlborough, Eastern Southland, ana Manawatu. The grounds are in splendid order, making play, fast in all matches. Three matches were contested, one in the "A" grade and two in the "B" grado. the latter, especially, providing a large attendance of the public with a good exhibition of the same. In the morning Eastern Southland met Marlborootgh in the first frame in the "A" section, the teams being evenly matched. The' fast ground at first puzzled the players, who later (rained the mastery and played fast, open hockey. Eastern attacked strongly in the first half,-but were repulsed by-the: solo efforts* of Miss .Main. The' Eastern forwards were much the faster, and persistently attacked, but lacked the finishing touch, several opportunities being lo»t through poor following up. vln the second half, play was very open, the teams combining' better. From a good forward rush. Miss1 M'Kinna; scored for Eastern. Mrs. Hogan equalising for Marlboiwutfh. Shtortly afterwards the game ended in a draw. Manawatu defeated Wairarap* in the B section by_s goals to 0. The first half was entirely in favour of the winJ nen, whose forward line showed great combination. Wairarapa were continually on the defence, and goals were scored for Manawatu by Misses Spensley and .Green. In the second spell Wairarapa improved considerably, and for a time kept their opponents defending, but several chances were lost through over-eager-net*. Manawatu in the closing stages added a further goal by Mils Scott. v The other gume in the B section x»s an easy win for Poverty Bay against Hawkes Bay Bby 5 goals to 0. The winners' played with , great combination' throughout, leading by three to nil at half-time.' The : second half was mostly in favour of Hawkes. Bay, who failed to make use of,their opportunities. Poverty Bay scored two further goals as the result of individual efforts. A feature of the game wasr the work of the Poverty Bay backs, Misses 'Newey' and Qleeme, and the goalie, Miss Gallagher. The scorers were Misses F. Hilt (3J and Golding.
