STRIKE AT A COAL MINE
EFFORTS TOWARDS SETTLEMENT
The strike at the Ngakawau mine, on the West Coast, over the alleged victimisation of an engine-driver atill continues. The dispute centres round the interpretation of a clause in the Inspection of Machinery Act relating to the supervision of1, boilers and engines, the man about whom the strike developed contending that he should have an assistant to help him in attending to the boilers
At the present time, a committee consisting of- the Chief Inspector of Machinery and two representatives from the employers and the Miners' Union is endeavouring to effect a settlement of the trouble, but it is stated that if the negotiations break down, there is a risk of all : the miners on the West Coast going out in sympathy with the Ngakawau men.
The Miners' Federation is interested in the matter, and the possibility of calling out the men on the Coast has been considered by that body.
