WHITE ISLAND

UNUSUAL ACTIVITY,

An unusual display of activity in the volcanic discharge of White Island, in the Bay of Plenty, was observed during last week. Colonel J. Ward, of Tauranga, who has long observed seismological and other phenomena in the district, has telegraphed to Professor E. Marsden, Victoria College, stating that "yesterday White Island beat my thirtysix years' record. Measured the column (of vapour) as 9984 feet above searlevel. Quiet to-day."
