It waa against the principles and practice of his whole life to flee from trouble. He also knew that his flight would prejudice him in the eyes of the public. He was anxious to come to grips with the grave charges against him, and was convinced that nothing ; dishonourable could b© proved. The'alleged falsification of the balance-sheets, he said, was an ordinary "window-dressing" operation.
