ON AUSTRALIAN RAILWAYS
A MODIFIED PROPOSAL,
(man nuu AseeeunoN.—mhbihi.) (Received July 13, 9 a.m.)
SYDNEY, This Day.
The Federal and State Governmeoita aa-e oonsJdwrrag an important modification of the railway gauge unification scheme, by means of which, it is claimed, the mileage will be reduced by some hundreds; of miles. The plain will be independent of the co-operation of Victoria and Smith Australia, which, do not favour it. The existing 'proposals would assist in developing the national land undertakings, and in completing important railways now hung up. It would al«o be more advantageous from a strategic standpoint, and would greatly reduce the initial cost and the work' of altering the gauges. The scheme is to link up , the Transcontinental. railway from Port Augusta with the New South Wales system by one of three suggested routes, largely across country, instead;, as previously proposed, of converting the coastal Knee.
