ATTEMPTED CORNER
TO RAISE THE PRICE OF BEEF
TRICKERY WITH RAILWAY
TRUCKS,
(OMTED PRBBS ASSOCIATIOH.—OOMKIOBT.) (Received July 11, 10 ajn.)
SYNEY, This Day. An attempt to corner the cattle market and force up the price of beef in connection with the sales at Flemington, was frustrated by the Railway Department and local agents. It has been the custom of the Railway Dqpartment, in consideration of the capacity of the yards, and the requirements of the auctioneers, to allot 300 trucks for the consignment of stock from country districts for each sale day. A week ago, it was discovered that one man had ordered 150 trucks for various northern stations for each day of the sales. The agents became suspicious, and discovered that it was not intended to use the trucks, as the dealers for whom he had ordered them were merely dummies. The agents thereupon approached the Department, and asked for a hundred extra trucks to be sent out,^ and in the meantime hurriedly advised their clients to send more cattle. This was done, with the result that the supplies at the sales were normal.
