AMALGAM,
(UNITED PMBS ASSOCIATION.—COPTOMHT.) (AUSTRALIAN-NBW ZEAI.VND CA»L» ASSOCIATION.) (Beceived July 11, 10 a.m.) , CAPETOWN, iOtti July. The Johannesburg mines secret police are investigating one of the most daring robberies orer perpetrated on the Rand. During the week-end one of the .richest gold mines was robbed of amalgam valued at over £5000. When the officials went to scrape the plates they found the gold missing., ' The thieves had removed the amalgam and redressed the plates with mercury. . \ [In the extraction of gold, from fairly rich ores, the amalgamation process is extensively used. The ore is crushed to a very fine state, and forms with water a mixture which is allowed to run over copper plates covered v/ith mercury. The gold mixes -with the mercury, forming an amalgam, which is periodically scraped off. When heated in a retort the mercury distils off and is condensed for further use, while the gold remains behind.]
