Y.W.C.A. HEALTH CAMPAIGN
HEALTH, OCCUPATION, AND ' DRESS.
Dr. D. Wilson, of Wellington Hospital, gave a most interesting lecture at the Concert Chamber last night in connection with the . Y.W.C.A. Health campaign, when his subject was . that of " Health1, Occnpation, and. Dress." Dr. Platts-Mills presided, and introduced the lecturer. " Dr. Wilson first dealt generally on the meaning of health to the community and individual. Merely from an economical point of view the importance of health to the nation could not be over-estimated. Of recruits examined for the N.Z.E.P. only 34 per cent, were passed Fit A. There are daily treated in our general hospitals as in-patients over 4000, and there are as many again in the -mental hospitals. . This cost annually, over £1,000,000 to the Dominion. In addition to this was all the -money spent on private hospitals, doctors, and patent remedies. The health of the individual depended npon many conditions, some of the important, ones being how . the body was properly eprcised without over-fatigue. The doctor spoke of how the blood was oxygenated by proper breathing, what kind of food was taken, and how masticated, and how the body was protected from the weather and injury. Lectures had already been given, he said, on proper breathing, dieting, and care of the teeth, so the lecturer did not dwell on these points, but emphasised again their importance. The importance of proper rest and exercise could not be overlooked. Activity and rest were necessary for health, but tho one must not outbalance the other.- ■ ; ■•'.-.- • ' •■'•
