AUSTRALIAN INTEREST IN NEW ZEALAND ART
Jliat Australian connoisseurs are increasingly appreciative of the special qualities of present-day New Zealand landscape painting was proved' tliis week by the purchase from the Murray Fuller Gallery, opposite the Midland Hotel, of a fine oil painting by Mr. Archibald F. Nicoll, of Christchurcb, the ■ buyer being Mr. C.; Lloyd Jones, who, as one of the proprietors, of the well-known art journal, Art in Aus-, tralia, and a trustee of the National Gallery of New South Wales, may be accepted as an exceptionally good judge of a picture. Christchurch 'artists, by the. way, are well .represented 'at. ■ Mr., Fuller's Gallery just now, some of Miss Stoddart's very beautiful .water-colours being a special attraction.. Miss Stoddart's ability in combining the use of rich colour with-a-great personal',-deli-cacy of' expression," has rarely b.eeu better displayed than in her two draw-' ings of scenes in Canterbury apple orchards. A winter scene in a Yorkshire village is also a peculiarly charming effort. .
