OBITUARY

MR. F. G. EWINGTON,

Mr. F G. .'Ewington, the well-known Auckland land agent and philanthropic worker, who died at his residence at Devdnport on Tuesday, was 79 years of age, and was born at Barnet, Hertfordshire, England. He arrived at Auckland on 27th October, 1862, by the ship Indian Empire. He went to Taranaki, after the outbreak of the Maori War, in 1863, and joined Colonel Nixon's Colonial Mounted Defence Force. He served in_ Tas-anaki in the local "bushrangers'} under Captain (afterwards Major . and later Sir) Harry Atkinson. Mr. Ewington was aboard H.M.S. Eclipse at the storming of one of the Maori redoubts. He entered General Cameron's service there, and left Taranaki with him iaa his orderly, going to the Waikato. Mr. Ewington was at the storming of Bangiriri—where the British force had 37 men killed and 87 wounded—and he held the New Zealand Medal for that engagement. Mr. Ewington commenced business as. a. land and estate > a"ent in Auckland in 1866, and was engaged in that business as head of the firm of Ewington and 'Baker, up till about two years aso. when his health broke dovyn. With Bishop Cowie, Mr. Ewington was one of the original founders of the Prisoners' Aid Society, the Women's Home, the Institute for the Blind, and the Sailors' Home. He was for over 30 years honorary secretary of. the Ladies' Benevolent Society and honorary official visitor of the Menta' Hospital, and was one of the founders of the Veterans' Home, serving for many years on the committee of management. He also served on the first Prisons Board, and was for many years a Justice of the Peace and an official visitor of prisons. Mr. Ewington had a_ family of thirteen, ten of whom are living.
