EARLY SETTLERS

COMMUNITY SINGING.

The meeting of the Early Settlers' Association held this past week was quite, in accordance with the spirit of the day, when a "community sing" was indulged in by members present. The arrangements were in the hands of Miss Henderson (who also played the accompaniments),' the conductor and leader being Mr. Jenkins. A most enjoyable evening was spent, for once the singing commenced each one joined in with a hearty goodwill. One member, long since passed the four score, was heard-to remark that he did not know he had a voice for singing until then. Another, also over four score, remarked on. the number of years since attempting to. sing-, and surprised herself (and many others) at the manner in which she joined in— such is the power of a community sing. During a short interval, Mr. J. Toomath, on behalf of the Natives' Association, requested the assistance and co-operation of members for the success of the fancy dress and poster ball his association was organising. for the benefit of tho Returned Soldiers Unemployment Fund. Community singing is no new thing for our early settlers.- They indulged in it often in earlier days, but they gave no name to it, and met at no special times. ComimiTiity singing is not new; only another revival of an old, old -custom, so the Early Settlers' Association just went back to another custom of its older members and their parents.
