LABOUR IN AUSTRALIA
SYDNEY,'2Sth May. Keen interest in political circles centres in the annual conference of the Australian Labour Party for this State. It will commence during the first week of the coming month, and it is generally considered that the direction which the craft of Labour is definitely to take will there be finally set. A strong section holds that ' a moderating tendency is absolutely essential if complete shipwreck is to be averted, hence a strong committee is recoamiending that the socialisation proposals of the notorious Brisbane Conference should be. abandoned, anil that the old objective of the party should be adhered bo. Moderation will not prevail without-'a fight, for those who have brought the movement to what it is have not repent<jd, and are said to be determined to hold out to the last ditch. Many are said to be awaiting the outcome, of the conference before finally deciding upon their attitude towards Mr. Catt's new party, and undoubtedly the existence of 'that party is stimulating widespread interest in the proceedings.
