MANCHESTER SHIPMENTS

NEW v ZEALAND ENCOURAGEMENT.

A cablegram received on Ist April, from Sydney Btated that' a new company bad been formed, called Manchester Consignments, Ltd., with a capital of £50,000 to support tho movement for direct shipments from Australasia to Manchester. "Regular steamship services from Manchester to Australia and New Zealand have been arranged." stated the message. "The statement is made that Mr. Massey is au fait with the proposal, and intends to support it when the time is opportune by not sending goods through London or Hull. • It is estimated that goods can be landed at Manchester on an average of £2 a ton cheaper."

A Post reporter mentioned this matter to tho Prime Minister to-day. Mr. Massey stated that lie had been informed of the steps taken by Manchester to encourage shipments of produce to that centre, and had publicly stated his approval of any such action which would extend New Zealand markets and thus be of benefit to the producers. He was glad ■o see that definite action was being taken to advance the business: but no arrangement had been made for diversion of Dominion shipments. For some years he had emphasised to the New Zealand producers tho valuo of developing trade with important centres in Great Britain thus extending the area for marketing our meat and dairy produce. While we woro seeking markets in other amntries wo must, not overlook tho possiblities for greater trade with Britain.
