FINED FOR ASSAULT

SEQUEL TO AN HOTEL QUARREL,

I A disturbance outside the Albion Hotel on 18th March last had its sequel in the Magistrate's Court tnis morning, when a young man named James M'Ardle appeared before Mr. F. K. Hunt, S.M., to answer a charge of having assaulted Thomis William Anderson. Sub-Inspector M'Namara. prosecuted, and the accused, who pleaded not gnilty, was represented by Mr. J. Ward. The Sub-Inspector said that Anderson had left the Albion Hotel shortly before 6 o'clock. Shortly afterwards the accused also came out of the hotel, and come words took place. M'Ardle then etruck the complainant, who fell to the ground. Several people who witnessed the affray followed the accused, and ■Anderson, who was unconscious, was removed to the Hospital, after being attended by Dr. Palmer. Anderson was in the Hospital for four days, and was still receiving medical attention. For the defence, Mr.; Ward said that the accused was not arrested until fifteen minutes after the assault took place, and he had plenty of time to get away if he -were the guilty party.. There was no reason why M'Ardle should strike Andereon.

In reply to the Magistrate, the accused said he did not, remember a great deal about the affair, and the fact that he was charged brought, him to his

senses. , "Yea, that's just the point," said Mr. Hunt. ■■■:■■■■ ■ ■ ■• , The Magistrate said that he had no doubt about the matter. There had been several fatalities caused through men raising their fists in this manner. He fined M'Ardle £10, and ordered him to pay costs amounting to £7 10s. Penalty in default was fired at- one month, and the^ accused was given 24 hours in which to find (.he money. Half the fine is to go to Anderson.
