PROBLEM.SOLVING CONTEST.

Particulai-s are now to hand from Auckland and Nelson regarding the world-wjlde problem solving contest conducted by the Good Companion Chess Problem Club on George Washington's birthday (22nd February). Mr. G. F. Dodds, the well-known congress. playerj won the Nelson contest, getting seven solutions in. two and a-half hours. In Auckland the first prize was \yon by Mr. D. J. Jones, with six solutions, the runners-up being Messrs. E. C. Hay and S., Coyne, each with five Solutions. The Dunedin, Christchurch, and Wellington results appeared in our issue of 27th February. The best New Zealand tallies are as follow :—

Twenty-seven New Zealand solvers were below tie 5C per cent, mark (twelve twomove problems were submitted for solution). Six of New Zealand's most expert solvers were, unfortunately, unable to take part—viz., F. A. L. Kuskop (Wellington), H. L. Andersen and Yv S. King (both of Christchureh), R. A. Clelancl and L. D. Coombs (both of Dunedin), and, E. A. Le Petit (Invercargill).
