PETONE v. MIDLAND

The Petone-Midland match was played at Petone, the home, team- batting first. Gedye and H. E. Nicholls, by careful cricket, compiled 35 runs before the former was beaten. Smyrk filled the vacancy, and offered good assistance to ■Nicholls in improving the total. At 89 Smyrk was bowled. Only one of the remaining batsmen —Finlayson—reached double figures, but chiefly through the sound display by H. E. Nicholls the total read fairly well at the termination of the innings. Nicholls scored 63, including eight 4's, and he was at the wickets for an. hour and 20 minutes. Bruce was Midland's main medium of attack. Maintaining a good length and breaking slightly from the off, he troubled th e batsmen, and finished up with outstanding figures—seven for 22. Midland com--menced their innings with less than an hour for the drawing of stumps'. Baker, however, was the only batsman to hold out-during that period, live others doing little scoring. . Patrick and A. Cunningham fell to fine catches by Parrant and M. Nicholls, and Bruce once again had the bad luck to go out lbw. At the end of the day's play Midland had five wickets down for 48 runs, the fielding on both sides was good. Details: —■ PETONE.-First Innings. Geyde, b Hutchings 15 11. E. Nicholls, cfc J.
