MAGISTRATE'S COURT
Mr. W. G. Riddell, S.M., presided at to-day's sitting of the Magistrate's Court. A man named John Smith, who was charged with unlawfully taking a motorcycle, valued at £20, the property of Munt, Cottrell, Ltd., without colour of right, but not so as to be guilty of theft, was sentenced to a month's imprisonment with hard labour. ' ' On a charge of failing to account on 18th July, 1911, for the sum of £1 6s 4d received from Mary Bretton, to Francis Edward Green, his employer, Percy James M'Callum was remanded until 13th February: Bail was fixed at £50. An attractively-dressed young woman named Nessie Carter, for whom Mr. J O'Donovan appeared, pleaded guilty to two charges of theft, and three charges of false pretences, involving money and article* to the value of £40 0s 9d. Mr. O'Donovan pleaded for leniency, and the Magistrate ordered Carter to come up for sentencp when called upon, provided she made good the sum involved. "If she does not repay the money within three months," said Mr. Riddell, "she will be brought up and' dealt with on these charges."
