ELLERSLIE TOTAL £459,362.

Tha amount of money invested on the totalisator during the seven days' racing catniyal in Auckland, which concluded onTuesday, totalled £652,480. Of this (states the New Zealand Herald) the sum of £439,362 was invested on the machine at the Auckland Racing .Club's four days' meeting at Ellerslie, and £213,118 went, through the totalisator at the three days' meeting of the Auckland Trotting Club at Alexandra. The figures recorded during the carni-; val just closed were £49,617 10* below those registered for the 1920-21 summer carnival, when a record was established, £702,097 10s being invested on the machine in seven days. The receipts, however, are considerably ahead of* those experienced for the corresponding per.iods in the 1919-20 a.nd 1918-19' seasons, whenf the amounts- invested were £609,----175 and £369,521' respectively. . , The increase in the Government tax on stakes and dividends, passed during the present session of Parliament,' operated throughout the recent carnival, but the increase in the amusement tax did: not come, into force until Ist January. The result of the increases is that the Government wiii reap'a substantial sum. The ordinary totalisa-tor tax at Ellerslie amounted'to £10,984;| and the tax oh dividends to £19,772, or a total of £30.759. In addition to these sums the Auckland Racing Club pays to the Government taxation on Stakes, to the amount 0f'£3075. 'The revenue derived by the ' Government froni the Auckland Trotting Club's Summei Meeting amounted to £14,917, being made up by £5327 ordinary 2J per cent, tax on the gross totalisator Tecoipts, and £9590 5 per cent. Ux on dividends. The, total amount levied in this way for the two meetings was £45,----676, exclusive of the tax on stakes and admission tickets. Last year the Government received £33,236 from this sonrce, or £12,440 less than this year's yield. . .
