ATTEMPTED SUICIDE
PRISONER CUTS HIS THROAT •WITH A BROKEN BOTTLE.
(II miOIUPPI.—PRBSB AHOCIATIOM.) ' AUCKLAND, 4th January. A middle-aged man, John- Carmody, was admitted to the hospital to-day with his throat cut, and was at once "taken to the operating-room to have his wounds stitched up. The case is one. of .attempted suicide. Carmody appeared ibefore the Court this morning on a,charge of vagrancy, having been {ound by night on the enclosed premises of St. Helens Hospital, where ne had greatly frightened some of the inmates. He was sentenced to fourteen days' imprisonment. He, was; seemingly half-crazed, evidently suffering from the effects of driiik/'ahd soon after being sentenced he seized an •opportunity to creep out of the prisoners' room and 'make' a ■ dash for; the door. He was promptly se"cured and returned to thevroom. The unhappy sequel, occurred soon after the prisoner's arrival at the Mount Eden Gaol, where he apparently got possession of^a broken bottle and attempted to end his life by cutting his throat. It is understood that his injuries are of a very"dangerous'nature.
