CALEDONIAN SPORTS

MONDAY'S BIG MEETING.

The Basin Reserve should be a popular resort on Monday, when a whole-day programme- of enjoyable sport is to be submitted by the Wellington Caledonian Society. Since its revival two years ago, the gathering has been one of" the leuding attractions of the holiday season, and the prospects for Monday are that previous successes will lie overshadowed. From 11 a.m. until S p.m. there will be a continuous supply of sport of various kinds, and the number of events is so large ,as to necessitate three and four being decided simultaneously. The dunning and piping competitions will commence at 11 a.m., and continue throughout the day. .Among the attractions in these departments will be several New Zealand championships—lament (piping), sheauntruibbhas (nifn), Highland fling (ladies), and sword dances (boys over and under 14 years of age). Large entries include the principal dancers and pipers from various parts of the Dominion. Ten pipers will contest the lament championship. During the afternoon trie leading competitors in the ladies and men's dancing sections will decide the M'Gregor Challenge Cup competition. The amateur athletic portion of the programme, to commence at 1 p.m., should attract great interest, as many champions are among the entrants. A special item will I;e the 120 yds hurdles, in which H. E. Wilson is to, make an effort to lower the world's record. The champion is in tine form, and it is fully, expected that his time will bo the best recorded since his return from the Olympic games. In field events ,P. Munro may alter the figures for the, Australasian shot-putting record, and he should do well with the discus. The running events have drawn large entries, and some line finishes should be witnessed, particularly in the competition for the Donald Gillies Cup (Caledonian Grand Handicap), and the 220 yds provincial championship. The distance races, for which the M'Donald Cup has boon donated, will be of much interest, as also will the three bicycle events, to be contested by fifteen cyclists. Events for boys and girls are also on the programme. Refreshments will be available on the ground.
