"Parent" writes cynically to congratulate a tram conductor on the _arori line for his strict observance of the tramway regulations yesterday, when the official brusquely refused permission to a small. eight-year-old boy 'to travel on the car because he was carrying a little tea-box containing two tiny white rabbits intended as v Christmas present for a little friend. The result was a mile and a-half walk for the would-be offender, and a late arrival at his destination, only to find his friend's house empty. "Fortunately," says the correspondent, "the lad found a kindlier disposed con r ductor on the homeward journey, one who brought a little discretion, to bear in his interpretation of the regulations— a discretion which surely all these officials should possess."
The epidemic of burglaries prevalent in tho oity a few weeks ago has abated a good deal, and, in the wards of ;v police official, matters have almost returned to normality again. Yesterday afternoon, however, n, house at tho uppor end of Thompson-street was entered by a, window during the* absence of the occupier, and several articles of clothing wero stolen.
Mr. K. de G. MacVitty, who ha_ arrived at Auckland from Sydney in order to take up the duties of American Consul at Auckland, has been stationed at Sa-igoh, as American Consul to French Indo-China. For the past few weeks he has been on detail to the Consulate at Sydney. Mr. D. F.
