INDIAN BOYCOTT

ARRESTS AND PROSECUTIONS

MODERATES BECOMING HOSTILE

(UNITED FRBSS ASSOCIATION.—COP^RIGIT.)

{AUSTRALIA?* vllr ZKALAWD CABLE ASSOCIATION.)

[B-eceived December 22, 9 a.m.)

DELHI, 20th December

Action against extremists is being taken everywhere, and numerous members of the proscribed Nationalist volunteers and their leaders have been arrested on charges of alleged sedition. The majority of the 'students of Calcutta University haVe struck, including those of the missionary colleges. Various vernacular newspapers are being prosecuted for publishing seditious articles or for inciting people to join tH|k volunteers. Ona or two have apologised- \to the Government, including the ieadipg extremist newspaper in Calcutta. Everywhere ■' deterrent sentences are being passed. Regarding Calcutta,' the soLe idea appears to ensure that the boycott of the Prince "of Wales will be complete, even to the extent of fastening placards on stray dogs advocating the boycott. The Government's firm attitude is causing hostile feeling, not only among the extremists but among uertain moderates,' and on,e provincial Government has decided to abandon the' campaign, but it is generally considered that the Government's action is justified.
