RUGBY RULES
objecti6n to amendment.
A communication from the English Rugby Uniop to tho N.Z.R.U. regarding the sanctioning of a request to play tho amended kick-mto-toueh rule in Auckland was placed before a meeting of the Wellington Ru.jby Union's Management Committee last evening. Tho advice from the E.R.U. stated: "My committee.has given most careful consideration to the application of your union for leave to vary the existing rules by adding the following clause to rule 12 dealing with locking tho ball into touch as follows; — 'Whon it pitches in touch from a kick (other than a penalty kick) within twentyfive yards of the kicker's goal line the opposite side shall bring it out, as in the rule, at a spot opposite the spot where the kicker was when he kicked the ball.' The committee is of opinion that this proposed alteration requires most careful consideration. It is prepared to give the matter the fullest attention during the coming -season, and if it approves, .with or without modification, will lay the matter before tho International Board. In the meantime, as it :s desirou« of meeting the wishes of the New Zealand Union wherever it iR at all possible without detriment to the main principles of our game, the committee, as a concession, offers no objection to games being played within this alteration. In so doing the committee in no way binds itself to the adoption of th?, amendment or otherwise, or the actual wording of it as submitted, and definitely restricts the concession to the- present application." The New Zealand Union pointed out that the rule could only be played in tho Auckland provincial district.
During a discussion, the Chairman (Mr. J. Prende/illel suggested that the Wellington Union should consider before tho next annual meeting of the N.Z.R.tf. the advisability of bringing forward a motion to rescind any approving of the rule. Other membera thought that there w»s an omission from the rule. Th* opinion was also expressed that many unions had changed their views since 1920 regarding the Auckland amendments. No decision was made, but the matter will probably bo discussed again at a later date.
