CHRISTMAS SHOPPING

CUBA-STREET TRANSFORMED.

That the Christmas season is not only at hand but has actually arrived was evidenced in the city to-day, when the streets were thronged with unusually large crowds who were bent on doing their Christmas shopping. Shop assistants as a result were kept going at very high pressure, and in all quarters it is reported that phenomenally good business was done.

Little imagination would be needed on the part of Cuba-street shoppers to think that they were entering a cool avenue of shrubs when making purchases for the happy season either for the household or for presents for adults or children. Tho street is a bower of greenery, and the decorations include some of the "patient pungas," as well as other bush treasures. The effect is good, and the result shade for the public, shelter from dust, and general pleasantness. The street naturally, therefore, is crowded, and the stores doing excellent business... it being quite difficult to get attention, though assistants are doing their ..best. The idea is a happjvone, as decorations aie always a pleasure to the eyes, and add to the attractiveness of the city.
