RAILWAY POLICY

MR. COATES'S OPINION

(IT TELEGRAPH.—PKEBS ASSOCIATION.) ■TE AWAMUTU, This Day. The Hon. J. G. Coates, replying unfavourably to a, deputation regarding the proposed Putarani railway scheme, said he believed that the past policy under which railways had resulted indiscriminately from promises of the Government or of Ministers was a wrong, one. The policy should be : First, that the Public Works Department should survey and estimate the cost of the> various possible routes; next, that the Railway Department should determine the best route for the rolling stock; and, finally, that the Agricultural Department should report on the prospective traffic, so that only profitable lines would be built.
