The Hoard of Trade inquiry into thn sinking of the British steamer Spathari, off the Portuguese coast, on 19th April, found that the chief engineer, Thomas Mailley, wilfully scuttled the ship by opening the sea communications with 'the engine-room. The master and officers did not try to ascertain the cause, of the leak, and prematurely abandoned the vessel. Majlley's certificate was cancelled, and the master suspended for three months. There was no proof thai, the owner was inculpated.
