RISE IN JAVA SUGAR

TKe surprise of the past few days has been the sensational increase in tho price of Java sugar (says tho Lyttelton Times of yesterday's issue). It has pone up by £17 a ton. "That is due to heavier demand," said ; an importer.- "It means that competition to 'colonial sugar is virtually eliminated, because Java sugar, under the new quotation, will have to be sold at over 6d a pound. As regards the Java sugar already ordered, we know nothing definite. The retail price of that will be fixed, when we know freight and exchange.costs."

Traders are still awaiting news 'of the latest contract price for Fiji sugar. It is anticipated that 5d a pound May be the retail rate.
