MANAWATU RAILWAY
SUNDAY TRAIN TO OTAKI.
In a, kitter to the Minister of Railways Mr. W. H. Field, M.P. for Otaki, says:—"As I have pointed out to you many times recently, and as you have had occasion to • see for yourself, tie wretched railway service 7 ■with which the people of the Manawaiu Line have had tc put up with for so many years is accentuated by the long and tedious stopping of trains at various stations. I refer particularly to Johnsonville and Paekakariki. For instance the Sunday, train, which is a great convenience, but -which gives visitors to Uie Mairawatu Line already too short a tame at th«. point of destination, stops for upward* of ten minutes at both Johnsormlle an* Paekakariki; these stops thus occupying, forty minutes of the total journey. Can-' not something he done to hurry this train along? There is a widely expressed opinion, that this train would be moret popular, and, tKbreftfre, be taken more advantage of, and bring more revenue to tha Railway Department, if it W Wellingtoa at 9 o'clock instead of hallpast, and occupied, as it might \«ill do, about; half an hour less 'than it doei at pT«sent in travelling to Otaki; an<* if it left Otaki at half-past five, or even six, instead of 4.30 on the return journey, 1 and reached town, as it might also do, at about eight .o'clock, or.halfpast. In the summer time particnlarly; it would be a great advantage to have a longer day in the country. At present the train, Teaches Otaki *t twelvti o'clock, and leaves again at 4.30."
