MANAWATU
(JI TELEGRAPH.—SPECIAL TO THE TOST.)
PALMERSTON N., 21st July. ' Mr. W. J. Poison, of Wanganui, president of the Wellington Provincial branch of the. Farmers' Union, addressed a meeting of farmers this afternoon on "Present Needs and Future Prospects of the Farmer." He dealt in an interesting manner with the subject. The aim of the Farmers' Union, he said, was to increase production, to encourage greater population, and closer settlement, and to produce prosperity, for all. They' were not asking for a maximum price for a poor product, they did not countenance "go slow," and they were absolutely loyal.
A successful, "hard-np" dance in connection with the Oroua Lodge ,of Druids was held last night, when there was a large attendance. Mr. C. H. Lyall was M.C. The.prizes for the most appropriate costumes were won by Mosdamcs Gillard and Adamson, and Messrs. Bateman and Larsen.
At the present time between 300 and 400 men are employed at the various flaxmills in the Manawatu district, compared with 700. or 800 when flax was commanding a good price and the mills were in full swing. ■ . •
