SELF-DETERMINATION LEAGUE
On Thursday evening in the Lyceum Hall, Lower Hutt, Mr.'P. J. O'Regan addressed a meeting of Hutt residents on the aims of the Self-determination League. Treating the matter from a political and. historical viewpoint, the speaker outlined the historical relations between Ireland and England, and contended that the present unrest in Ireland is the direct result of English official misgovernment. An outline was ,given of the Irish constitutional movement for Home Rule, ending in the downfall of Redmond. In examining the causes of the movement, the speaker briefly touched on, similar national movements in Poland, South Africa, Egypt, and India, insisting that government, must be based on the consent of the governed. At the . conclusion 'of the address a branch of the league was formed, and some £50 was subscribed towards the league's funds.
