ARBITRATION COURT DECISIONS

CARPENTERS AND JOINERS.

Several awards of the Arbitration Court were filed at Wellington yesterday. ■ In the case oi the Palmerston North Amalgamated Society of Carpenters and Joiners, the minimum rate of wages for journeymen carpenters and. joiners and joiners' machinists is fixed "at 2s per hour. To these rates there is added a bonus of 3|d per hour, unless and until the Court shall otherwise order. All workers in outside1 jobs 'responsible for carrying out the work and who give instructions to other workers, are to bo paid not less than Is per day in addition to the above-mentioned wages. If a worker uses his bicycle in the work of his employer at the request of the latter, ho is lobe paid 2d per mile or portion of a mile for the use of the same. • • , All work done outside 'or in excess of the usual hours are. to count as overtime and are to be paid for at the rate of time and a-half for the first three | hours and -double time thereafter. Double time is to be paid for all work done on holidays and the. day of the annual picnic. All piecework is prohibited. Country work is defined as that ,which necessitates the worker, sleeping from home, and employees , engaged in such work a*e to be conveyed to and from at the expense of the employer. Time occupied in travelling is to be paid for at ordinary rates, but no journeyman shall be paid more than an ordinary day's wages for time occupied by him in travelling.. A; journeyman, who is called upon to travel for more than four hours on Saturdays, shall bs ; paid for eight. Country employees are to- receive an additional 5s a day for six days a week, or the employer may provide them with suitable board and lodgings. Other .clauses relate to apprentices and; their employment, to disputes and their reference to a Disputes Committee, to exemptions, ( and to various other matters. The award, insofar as it relates to" wages, is deemed to have' come into force on Ist November, 1920, and insofar as the other provisions on 22nd June, 1921. It will continue in force until 24th May; 1922. i' BUTCHERS' AWARDS. Amendments were made to the awards of the Manawatu and Wairarapa District Operative Butchers' Unions. The order provides that the present rates shall be increased by a 9s bonus (clause 2) and a6s bonus (clause 4). The hours of work are fixed at 48 per week, between 7 a.m. and 4.30 p.m. on four days, and between 7 a.m. and 5 p.m. on the other day. For the purpose of calculating the hours of work and the statutory holidays, the day's work is to be.fixed at eight and a-half hours. Overtime is to be paid for at the rate of time1 and a-half for the first three hours and" thereafter at doable time. The awards take effect from Ist July.
