GAS COOKERS

TO THK EDITOR. Sir, —Considering that the Customs tariff is at present being revised and that the people are desirous of an approach to nre-war prices, the decision of the Minister of Customs to prohibit importation of gas cookers is to say the least remarkable. Why one particular industry should get protection of this sort is not clear. Presumably we will shortly have a like embargo on confectionery,' biscuits, woollen goods, produce, toilet preparations, boots, and hundreds of other; lines which we do not require to import, and thus close any further free trade. It would, of course, be fitting if Great Britain and America adopted the same narrow policy as regards our exports. Seeing that we are at present protecting the gas cooker industry by high tariffs we should not further boost up the price of the local article. ' Seemingly the Government is desirous of keeping up costs, as this is in accord with the artificial price of wheat. A matter such as an embargo on articles which can be manufactured in the Dominion should be dealt with by Parliament, and it is not good policy for onOj article to be sorted out at the whim of a Minister. It is another instance of the lopsided state of our politics.—l am, etc., J. M. NOBLE. 11th May.
