SPANNING SPACE
More than ordinary interest attaches to the barqlie Manurewa. which arrived at Wellington this week from Clarenco River, N.S.W., in that the vessel is fully equipped with a wireless telephonio installation. The plant is situated in the ship's cabin, and takes up only four square feet of space. By the turning of a, switch it can bo transformed from telephonic to telegraphic or vice versa. While he wa9 on the Australian coast, the captain was in constant communication with otl-mr _ vessels, which, though . not equipped with a telephonic plant, could take and receive messages? on the ordinary telegraphic plant. Captain Holmes ciairns that ths Manurewa is the first sailing vessel to have a wireless telephonic equipment. His plant is tfto invention of a San Franciscan, and would cost about £-150 to install. The Munurewa came in from the stream yesterday and berthed at the Railway Wharf.
