MERCHANT SERVICE GUILD

ANNUAL MEETING AND RE-UNION.

The twentieth annual meeting of the Merchant Service Guild of Australasia, New Zealand section, was held in the Dominion Farmers' Buildings to-day The president (Captain J. T. King) occupied, the chair. There, was a large, attendance of members. / The annual report and balance-eheet were adopted after considerable discussion.

A social re-un:on was held at the conclusion of the business meeting. The visitors present were Mr. T. R. Wallace! (secretary of the 7 Institute of Marine En{fineere) and Mr. E. K. Kirkoaldio (solicitor to tho guild). The chairman apologised for the absence of Mr. Duncan (Secretary o£ +ho Marine Department). > The toast-list was: "The King," "The Merchant Service Guild," "The Institute of Marine Engineers," "The Meteorological Department," and "The Guild's Solicitor." /

In the course of the proceedings, special emphasis was laid on 'the fact that the guild had always pursued a legitimate means of obtaining- its <»nds, and members strongly expressed the opinion that it should continue on the some line.

Mention was made of the importance of dII ships being- fitted with wireless. Vessels not thus fitted were, it was urged, weak links in the chain. Medical and surgical aid oan now, at was stated, be obtained at ?ea by the special wireless call, "K.D.D.T.," and an instance v/as given where a lndy passenger's life was saved by assistance obtained,as the result of sending out the call.

In a review of the work of the guild, it .was stated as a coincidence that tbe institution was now out o£ its "teens," and that tbe three secretaries who had been at tho whael since its Jnoeption all commenced their career in the New Zealand Shipping Company's sailing- ships. The re-union was a 1 most successful one.
