WAIHt, 29th April. The Hon. G. J. Anderson (Minister of Mines), accompanied by the Under-Sec-retary, Mr. A. H. KimbeU, arrived here this afternoon, and was waited upon by deputations. " a The Minister was asked to facilitate the construction from the Waihi end of the East Coast Trunk line. "He said he recognised the importance of the completion of the work, which would be pushed on as rapidly as possible. In reply" to a request that he should use his influence to have loans advanced to returned soldiers for building pivrposes in mining centres, the Minister said that he could not give it his support owing to the absence of permanence in the mining industry.
The Miners' Union representatives drew Mr. Anderson's attention to the fact that North 'Island workers are compelled to work, eight hours per shift in a temperature up to 83 degrees, whereas in the South a six-hours shift was observed in all places over 80 degrees.
