FUNNEL FACTS ABOUT SHAMROCK IV
Sir Thomas Lipton," according to the Pall Mall Gazette, h«s received n. letter tram, a lady correspondent in Cleveland, Ohio, asking him for some particulars about his yacht, Shamrock IV. Among the details she asks for arc the number of funnels and the cost. Sir Thomas, in his -reply, thanks hie correspondent for "the kindly interest she takes in the matter," and proceeds:
"The yacht's 'passenger nccommodation' is, I regret to say, extremely limited; I have no reason to suppose she could with comfort accommodate as many as 125 passengers in the steerage and 250 in the saloon. ■>
"With regard to 'funnels,' even in the winter I ha-ve never known her to carry SB many as ten, and in summer, when tho weather naturally i« warmer and there is less demand for hot water bottles, foot warmers, and hot drinks, there need not bo more than six funnels in use. This does not take into account the cook's galley funnel, which is the most useful of all, and is not controlled by trade union regulations, working as it does twenty-four hours a day. "This matter of funnels has also an important bearing on the yacht's 'speed,' as it naturally follows that ehe would, with tower funnels, bo lighter in summer than in winter, and consequently able to travel faster.
"Tho 'weight' of Shamrock IV. depends largely on circumstances; naturally after meals she weighs more, and this function a-leo materially affects her "breadth. 1 "Wifli respect to her 'length,' sifter deduction of time allowances she has generally proved to be longer than her rival ia winning a raco. "Your curiosity as to-her cost is not easily satisfied, as yachts, like everything olae, havo goao up in price, since the war; but I believo I am right in saying ,that to build a yacht liko Shamrock TV.. to-day would cost over 500 dollars."
