PROTEST AGAINST REDUCTION OF SUBSIDIES

(IT TBLEORAFH.—FKI3S ASSOCIATION.)

PALMERSTON N., 29th April,

A conference of contributing bodies was held at Palmerston North to discuss the proposed increase of hospital board levies and reduced Government subsidy.

It was considered that the present system of taxation was unreasonable, and it was stated that Pofoangina, County last year paid £870 by way of levy, and had. three patients in hospital, averaging £290 for each patient. The following motion was carried :— "That this meeting of local bodies enters an emphatic protest to the. .Commission in regard to the proposed rate of subsidies to be paid hospital boards within this district, which will mean a reduction of 12s 3d in the £1; and; further, that this meeting is of opinion that all hospital boards should be treated alike, and that a subsidy of £1 for £1 should be paid, as the present system means increased subsidies to gome hospitals at the expense of others." \
