THE CHURCHES

ST. PAUL'S.

The/report of the churchwardens and vestry :of St. Pa^ol's jerish. Thoradoa, which will be presented at t-se .annual meeting of parishioners, states thai as the result of a special Appeal to me-si the cost of certain repairs, tie gemerostj' of the members of ihe church, had enabled the liabilities to £>? met; and the churchwardens were sbk to show a small credit balance.

During the year the last- of the mortgages was paid off—a long ootetandinjr debt of £1000. on the 'Tinakori-road schoolroom. As the debt on Sydneystreet schoolroom and the vicarage had been cleared in the last two years, the parish was free from encumbrances.

One of the questions that had to be faced wae provision for a better schoolbuilding than the old room in Tinakoriroad. The balance of purchase money for the sale of-the upper section would not go far, but would feerve as a nucleus! for providing better accommodation for the school: The numbers attending the school were increasing, and under Miss Atkin the efficiency of the school -was improving. The church wardens gratefully acknowledged the additional gifts of the late Dr. Pennefather, who to the last maintained his interest in the school, of which he was chief founder. /

The Sydney-street schoolroom was still let to the Girls' College. It wae available for parish purposes from Fri-. day afternoon to Monday morning, and was used for the Girls' Friendly Society and for Sunday school. The next vestry would have to consider whether it was in the interest of the parish to- let this room.

The sale of work held last September was both a social and financial success. Mrs. A. L. .Warburton proved a most capable secretary, and to her and all who helped her thanks was due. The .report ako makes acknowledgement of the splendid work done by various parishioners in connection with the church work;' and reference is made to members who have passed away during the year.
