NEWTOWN SCHOOL SITE

For several years the Newtown Schop} site has been one pf the most important matters confronting the Soh.opl Committee, and it l)aa beet} a subject of muck negotiation with the Education Board and the Government. At last night's meeting of householders the site question was again discussed, with the result that by a small majority the householders' previous deoigion to support the scheme for the erection of two schools on different sites was practically reversed.
Mr. H. E. Swindell urged that every effort should be made tp retain the present site, and suggested that property adjoining the school could be purchased. This site was central and most suitable, and on it there could be erected a model, up-to-date building, instead of Durchasiriff new propertjes elsewhere.
The chairman (Mr. j. W. Salmon) pointed. £>»(■ tl)at the committee had made every effort to secure land surrounding the present ,but toj been met with the reply that in view of the ereat shortage of house? tjie l)oard cou}d not conscientiously ask that tb,e houses on the land should be demolished. Mr. A. R. Hornblow stated/that on the proposed ?He in Coromantlßl-street there were a number of houses. He was opposed to removal of the school from its pre"sent site.
Mr. Swindell moved, "That it be an instruction from this meeting of householders to the cpmmittee to strongly oppose any scheme to X'emove th,e school from its present site." After further disetissipn the motion was carried by 26. votes to 23, many of the householders having by this time left the meeting.
