OTAKI

(IT TIIiIQRAPH.—SPECIAL TO IH« POST.)

OTAKI, This Day

Building permits to the value of £52.912, with fees £128 2s, have- been granted by the Hutt County Council during the year from Ist April, 1920, to 31st March, 1921, as follow:—Whareroa Riding, £11,127, fees ±!31 15s; Horokiwi, £13,019 and £31 2s; Epuni, £10,395 and £23; Mungaroa. £10,687 and £25 15s; Wainuiomata, £7684 and £16 10s.

At the Borough Council meeting Councillor Taylor raised the question of roadmen doing work for private people. Tho Mayor pointed out that as long as tho work desired did not interfere with road work it was in order, provided ratepayers "paid the piper." Ho considered improvement done in thi3 way was a benefit to tho town, and maintained that the ratepayers had the right to make use of the borough workmen. Councillor Bell raised no objection as long «s the outeide work did not. extend over one day.

At the Borough Council meeting reference was made to the roads being mado near th« Kiosk. Councillor Kilsby considered the roads too narrow, and thought they should be widened to 17ft, which would be amplo to allow cars to pass each other safely. If tho council took over the roads in their present state it would be heavily burdened with expense later on. It was pointed out that Mr. Brown had practically completed the roads, but it was maintained no hardship would be inflicted by putting on additional metal. Councillor Bax considered the roads should not bo taken over till completed to the satisfaction of the engineer. Councillor Bills agreed. Ho thought Mr. Brown should bo notified at once regarding the widening, and thus give him a chance to do the work while he had men available. The matter oE forming footpaths was held in abeyance.

Drains on the mission property were discussed at the last Borough Council meetin;; on Thursday, when Councillor Bills reported thnt he had a promise of £3 10s toward* cleaning them. Councillor Broadway considered the work should be expedited, and a tender accepted for the work. It was pointed out. that the Porirun Mission would give a grant of £5. It was decided to have the work done at once.
