NEWTOWN.
The Newtown School Committee rs-cor-ds with pleasure that the year has been one of fair progress in the various matters affecting the welfare of the school. It was gratifying to note that the discipline and efficiency of the school had been maintained, and nothing of a serious nature has occurred. The senior scholars, both girls and boys, were successful in obtaining certificates entitling them to free places at the Girls', Boys', and Technical Colleges; of 81 pupils, 78 gained the necessary certificates. The record reflected gTeat credit upon their headmaster and their teachers.
During the year the Minister of Education _ visited the school unannounced, and his inspection of the building apparently convinced him of the necessity for some improvement. The Education Board had made some headway in the matter of securing sites, one to the eastward and the other westward, and they advised that they were doing their utmost to secure the necessary ground. Though various improvements had been carried out as regards fittings, etc., the great drawback was, of course, the state of the building, which was not only too small but wag woefully unsuitable for its purpose, and if a new one was not possible in the immediate futuro the interior should be entirely remodelled'; the building being in wood this could be easily done. The need for proper buildings for the large number of children in the district was as urgent as_ ever. The present building was showing signs of decay and needs constant care and attention, and the sanitary arrangements were also quite insufficient, especially for the teachers, the girls and the infants.'
A word of commendation is paid to the caretaker, Mr. Smith, for his constant attention and supervision, the class-rooms always presenting as clean, an appearance as is possible.
