WATERFRONT POSITION
ATTITUDE OF MEN'S FEDERATION NOT KNOWN
There is not likely to be any change in the', situation on the waterfront -until the Waterside Workers' Federation has replied to the employers' request for assurances that work in the future will be carried out uninterruptedly and in accordance with the full terms of the existing agreement. The exact nature of the assurance required has been communicated to the federation, bnt the terms are not available for publication. In some quarters it is feared that the federation's reply will not be available before Thursday. If. that should be the case matters will continue to drift on just as they are drifting at present, the situation becoming more serious all the time. Only an early settlement can prevent serious unemployment becoming general.
The Marama, which arrived from Sydney yesterday, will leave for San Francisco to-morrow afternoon. The vessel was to have loaded cargo in Wellington, but owing to circumstances which arose this morning it was decided not to do ao. The vessel will isail without the local cargo. > ■
