BRILLIANT PLAY IN MELBOURNE.
(GNITBtI PKKSS ASSOCIATION.—COPYRICHT.) MELBOURNE, 16th January. The weather was beautiful, and the court was in good order yesterday for the teams match between. America and Australia. Tho attendance was a record. In tho singles, Tilden beat Brookes, 6-1, 6-4. Brookes' serving and placing were superb on the side and base lilies. Tilden's receiving and covering of the court was brilliant. Long backhand drives formed a feature of both players' work. Tilden gave a clever exhibition of skimming the net. Tilden opened tho second set with a deadly express service, Brookes playing well to . the side lines: There was a great rally with the play on the side and halfcourt lines. Tilden. was scoring with his service strokes, and Brookes was receiving and placing splendidly. Tilden won the,ninth, and tenth games dashingly. Patterson beat Johnston. 6-2, 4-6, 64. 'Johnston won -lie service, ajid began scoring, placing well on the base line. Patterson was returning beautifully, and showing great improvement on yesterday's display, scoring repeatedly by smashing lobs delivered by Johnston. The final set was full of long drives. In the doubles, Washbum. and Johnston beat O'Hara Wood and Hawkes, 5-7, 6-3, 4-6, 6-2, 6-5. An element of humour was introduced by Washbtirn and Johnston competing for strike from lob». There was no serious play until the'last .■:et. American won the first, second,- and fourth, and Victoria the fifth and sixth games, making the games three all. America followed with the next three, and won the set.
