(HI HLI6BAPH.—SPECIAL TO THE fOST.) OTAKI, 6th November. , The monthly meeting of the Horpwhenua County Counoil was held at Levin on Saturday, Councillor G. Alex. Monk presiding. Correspondence was read and dealt with as follows: — From Public Health Department, reporting a case _ of diphtheria at Levin, and suggesting improvements to the hotise in which- the case occurred. The matter is to be attended to. From' Mangahao Hydro-eleotrio Power League, reporting on the progress of the work done at Mangahao. It was agreed that work was proceeding at a satisfaotory rate. Councillor Monk was appointed to .represent the counoil at a meeting of the League to be held at Palmerston North on 17th November From Palmerston North Hospital Board, making a levy of £295 on the counoil for additions to the hospital. From A. J. Sheargold; asking for road improvement opposite his property-at Levin. The matter was referred to the engineer. From L. W. Jeffries (Ohau) applying for water-race extension. The matter was left to the engineer to report-on. From 0. W. Higgins (Oroua Downs), asking for road improvements. Ths improvements are to be done without delay. From W Mason, complaining of the bad state of the Pahika drain at Te Horo. Referred to the engineer. From H. W. Bear and ten other surfacemen, applying for an increase in wages. The matter is to be referred to the incoming council. From Department of Internal Affairs, enclosing a_ report of the commission set up to inquire into objections made in "connection with the proposed borough of Otaki. The letter was received. From'J Howard (Levin) stating he had cleared Gladstone-road of slips, and 'asking for remuneration. The request was held over. The engineer reported that despite' heavy weather and floods, practically no damage had beon done to the roads in the district. . The approach to the Shannon bridge was threatened, and this would be attended-to. He also drew attention to farmers of the Kuku emptying whey on to the roadside. Attention was drawn by Councillors M'Learey and Ryder to the large number of wandering stock, but in view of the recent floods it was stated that allowances had been made. It was decided to open, the dietriot roads in the Tokomaru and Wirokino ridings from the 9th inst. The chairman and olerjf both submitted reports of the work done during the year, while the former took the opportunity of thanking councillors. for courtesy and assistance during.his- term of office. Mr. B. R. Gardener, town clerk of Levin, was seized with a sudden illness after a meeting on Friday night, and now lies in a serious condition. Mr. Geo. Watson, ex-councillor of the Horowhenual County Council, and Mr. J. Malcolm, exengineer to the same body, are also ill.
