THE COAL MINES
PUKEMIRO DIFFICULTY
Mr. P. Hally's negotiations with the Pukemir'o Miners' Union has resulted in an assurance from the union that work will be resumed immediately if the question of the status of the engine-drivers is referred to the National Disputes Committee. This proposal is on exactly the same lines as that suggested by the Coal Mine-owners' Association last wjeek—a proposal that was subsequently withdrawn, because it was thought that the union, )in failing to reach a decision at once, was trifling with the association. Mr. Hally's arrangement, therefore, is likely to cause complications. It could not be ascertained to-day whether the executive of the Coal Mine-owners' Association was prepared to reconsider the matter and agree to the sitting of a Disputes' Committee. An announcement may be made to-morrow.
In view of the latest developments, "stop-work" meetings of lall Miners' Unions, which were fixed for. to-day, were cancelled. The. owners' decision on the. Disputes Cbmmi'iee proposal is'now being awaited.
