A GHOULISH THEFT

CHRISTCHURCH, 12th October.

A ghoulish theft was perpetrated between 19th and 21st September by Hilda Maud Brown, an Englishwoman, 31 years of age, who appeared in the Magistrate's Court to-day charged with the theft of a diamond ring, valued at £10, the property of Gavin HallibuTton. The ring was stolen from a corpse. ChiefiDetective M'llveney stated that complainant's wife had died prior to the date of the theft. . Shortly before, dying she asked complainant that a diamond" ring she was wearing might be- I'buried with her, and the ring was left on her finger. Shortly before> the coffin was closed it was noticed that the hands of the deceased had been moved and the ring was missing. Accused had been a domestic servant at the house. When questioned about the disappearance of the ring, she stated that she knew nothing of it. Liter she left her situation and went to Wellington, where she was searched and the diamond ring vyas found among her effects. Accused was convicted and ordered to come up for sentence when called upon. She was also ordered to pay the cost of the proceedings, and to report to a clergyman once weekly for a year.
