TEACHERS' SALARIES
ANNOUNCEMENT BY MINISTER
The Minister of Education will make a statement in the House of Riepi-esenta-tives this afternoon covering the increases in teachers' salaries. Speaking of the mattar this morning Mr. parr said that over 7000 teachers wens concerned ' in these increases to primary and Native school teachers; the increment to teachers in the technical and high schools would be dealt with later, as they must be the subject of legislation in the Education Bill to be brought down a fewdays hence. The Minister indicated that there would be announced considerable increases in the primary pupil teachers and probationers' salaries, and claimed that these increases would bring them; to at least tho position of Public Service entrants. The position of the sole teachers of schools and the headmasters of smaller country schools was also to bie treated sympathetically. It was his aim, ta make the profession more attractive to young 'people, and while dealing with present needs, to have regard to the future of the teaching profession by making permanent additions to the salaries of positions outside the towns. Mr. Parr pointed out that the sum of £250,----000 was involved, making a total of haifi a million granted by the present Government by way of increases to teachers within .the past two years.
